Water treatment and the chemicals used

Coagulation
Coagulation, sometimes also referred to as charge neutralisation, is the first step in water treatment. The coagulant, positively charged, binds with the negatively charged particles (dirt in the water) and forms larger particles. The coagulants are mostly metal salts that can be in liquid or solid form.

Typical products would be: Aluminium sulfate, Polyaluminium chloride, Aluminium chlorohydrate, Polyamine blends, PolyDADmac blends or Ferric chloride/sulfate
Flocculation
Flocculation follows coagulation and could involve adding additional chemicals, flocculants, that binds with the particles to form flocs. These so called flocs are formed by slowly mixing the water to increase the floc size and therefore also increase the speed at which these flocs can settle out of suspension. After flocculation the water is fed to a clarifier/settling basin where the flocs can settle and form a sediment at the bottom.

Typical products would be: Polyacrylamides, Polyamines, PolyDADmacs
pH correction
This step could be done before coagulation and after flocculation. If done before coagulation it will most likely be due to low alkalinity in the water that needs to be treated. pH correction after flocculation would be to prevent the corrosion or scale potential of the water in the water supply system.

Typical products would be: Soda ash, Hydrated lime, Potassium hydroxide or Sodium hydroxide
Disinfection
Disinfection is the process where a treatment (chemical or non-chemical eg. UV) is used to kill pathogens in the water treatment process. This can only be done as a final step after clean water has been produced.

Typical products would be: Calcium hypochlorite (tablets, granular) or Sodium hypochlorite
